In Denmark, materials and production aren't afterthoughts they're central to whether something should exist at all. Every material we choose, every production partner we work with, reflects that standard.
This page outlines our production and material foot print.
Play Mats
Production
Our play mats are produced in Changhua County, Taiwan—a region known for precision manufacturing. We work with a family-owned facility that has specialized in non-toxic foam development since 1980, decades before material safety became an industry standard. This wasn't a partnership born from convenience or cost—it was built on alignment of values.
The 40-person workshop manages everything in-house: foam formulation, printing, cutting, and packaging. Their 8-person QA/QC team ensures accountability at every stage. As an RCS-certified and ISO 14001-certified facility, they meet the environmental and social standards we require. Independent SGS laboratories test each product to exceed international safety standards, including EN71, ASTM F963, CA65, REACH, and CNS15493. You can see our comprehensive safety certificates in our safety page
Manufacturing & Certification
Our play mats are made from rigorously safety tested foam that contains 50% recycled content. This recycled content is certified at the supplier level under the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS), which provides third-party verification that recycled materials are tracked throughout production.
Our supplier holds RCS certification for the recycled content in the foam core. Copenhagen Kid as a brand does not hold brand-level RCS chain-of-custody certification. We are actively pursuing independent verification through several avenues to document the recycled content in our finished products on a brand level:
We are currently close to obtaining verification with SGS under ISO 14021 to document the recycled content in our finished products, with completion expected end-of January 2026.
Until verification is complete, our 50% recycled content claim refers to supplier-level certification and tracked material inputs.
Our supplier's RCS certificate is available upon request: [email protected].
Wood Furniture & Decor
Production
Each of our wood products is designed and hand-crafted in our family run Los Angeles wood shop. Small-batch production allows us to maintain traditional woodworking standards—from wood selection through joinery and hand-finishing, each piece receives direct oversight.
This approach eliminates the industrial manufacturing footprint entirely. No factory machinery. No chemical treatments. No multi-stage supply chain. The environmental impact of handcraft is measured in hand tools and attention, not energy consumption and shipping routes.
We build furniture meant to last generations, not product cycles. Solid wood construction, traditional joinery, and considered design mean these pieces age rather than degrade. The most sustainable furniture is the kind you never replace.
Solid Wood Products
All oak furniture is made from FSC-certified oak wood sources. As a small-batch wood shop, we don't hold manufacturer-level FSC certification, but we maintain purchase documentation for each production run. FSC sourcing receipts are available upon request for any order placed.
Plywood Products
Our Plywood components exclusively use Columbia Forest Products PureBond formaldehyde-free plywood. You can read detailed specs for Columbia Forest PureBond plywood here.
which eliminates formaldehyde exposure through soy-based adhesive technology.
Keep Our Oceans Clean Initiative
Plastic Bottle Recovery
For every order, we partner with GoodAPI to stop 10 plastic bottles from entering the ocean. The initiative focuses on:
-
Intercepting bottles before ocean entry
-
Supporting coastal cleanup operations
-
Reducing ocean-bound plastic waste
Packaging
Wood products ship in sustainable packaging - we only use recycled materials.
Play mats: Current inventory ships in standard packaging. All pre-orders and incoming inventory feature sustainable packaging.
